What is an American financial services firm doing in Rwanda? This is the story about Liquidnet’s comprehensive partnership with the ASYV, a home, community, and high school for 500 orphaned children in Rwanda

At the heart of Liquidnet For Good is our signature project in Rwanda, the Agahozo-Shalom Youth Village (ASYV). This groundbreaking partnership provides Liquidnet employees with the opportunity to have a direct impact on a global challenge. More than an orphanage or boarding school, the ASYV’s innovative model provides a home, supportive family, and comprehensive education for over 500 orphaned teenagers. Each year, the ASYV takes in a new class of students from across Rwanda and provides them with a place to heal and the tools to flourish. Over the course of four years, they transform into healthy and self-reliant high school graduates, empowered to reach their full potential and engaged in rebuilding their nation.

Founded as a response to the 1994 Rwandan Genocide, the ASYV was modeled after youth villages in Israel, which initially cared for youth recovering from the trauma of the Holocaust. The name is a combination of Kinyarwanda and Hebrew, reflecting the shared connection between the two countries: Agahozo, “a place where tears are dried,” and Shalom, “peace.”

Through a volunteer network called the Liquidnet Family, Liquidnet employees and family members helped launch the ASYV and continue to sustain it today. In appreciation, the school at the ASYV is named the Liquidnet Family High School (LNFHS). With an emphasis on critical thinking skills as opposed to rote memorization, the school aims to create a new generation of thoughtful citizens. When asked the difference between LNFHS and schools they attended in the past, students often respond: "At Liquidnet Family High School, the teachers ask us what we think, not only what we know."

Each year a team of employees from Liquidnet offices around the world travels to Rwanda to put their skills to work. From setting up IT and accounting systems, to building a wireless network across the entire campus, to installing computer labs, and providing capacity-building leadership training and staff development, employees from all over the globe have contributed their variety of talents and passion to the ASYV.

Liquidnet Family at Home
The Liquidnet Family launched Race for Rwanda in 2007, which has become a platform for a variety of ASYV supporters to raise money and awareness for the organization. Each year, teams of Liquidnet Family members take part in various competitions around the world —from the New York City Triathlon to the Spartan high endurance race in Sydney, Australia to the Bloomberg Square Mile in London.

The Liquidnet Family started an annual benefit event for the ASYV in 2009, which raises a significant portion to support the ASYV’s annual operating budget each year.  Employees continue to support this gala every year by helping to organize, attending, and volunteering.


From employee’s first day, impact is at the center of their Liquidnet experience.  They receive a full orientation on all Liquidnet for Good initiatives, and a GlobalGiving charitable gift card to jumpstart their actionable engagement. 

Through a team-based program operating out of each global office, we provide employees with the platform to support causes they care about through use of their resources, time, skills, and passion.

Double Down: A New Approach to Matching Gifts
We match employee’s personal donations to their favorite causes up to $2500 per employee per year—  even the contributions they fundraise from others. Double Down also makes cash matches for the hours employees spend volunteering.

Double Down | Earth encourages employees to make environmental sustainability a part of their daily lives. We reimburse employees for up to 50 percent of the costs (up to $250 per year) of green products and services they purchase, from energy efficient appliances to home weatherizing efforts to bike share programs.

Liquidnet kids for kids
Founded in 2005, Liquidnet kids for kids  cultivates the next generation of givers, by tapping into their creativity. Each year, we invite the children of employees and Members around the world to submit their drawings based on a theme related to making the world a better place. One winner is selected to receive a $250 GlobalGiving gift card to donate to the charity of their choice. All participants receive a $50 giving card and a book of that year’s collected artwork. The kids love to see their work in print, and the program reinforces the spirit of giving, the importance of empathy, and the idea that everyone can make a difference.

Youth Mentoring
Cristo Rey High School: Since 2008, Liquidnet has partnered with the Cristo Rey High School in East Harlem New York to provide students with hands-on mentorship and work experience. Cristo Rey helps low-income families finance their students’ private education through a Corporate Work Study program. Working at companies like Liquidnet one day a week and going to school four extended days a week, students expand their vision for the future. We watch them transform from nervous high school freshmen to confident, college-bound seniors.

Holiday Toy Drive
Employees especially appreciate the opportunity to give back around the holidays. Every year since the launch of Liquidnet For Good in 2007, our employees, and their friends and family in the New York region have purchased holiday gifts for children affected by crisis in partnership with The Family Center.

Throughout the year, employees form teams and partner on initiatives designed to give back to their local communities – whether in Sydney, Hong Kong, Tokyo, London, Toronto, or New York City.

Member Community Giving
At the core of our business is our community of customers — we call them Members. And whenever possible, we stand with our Members to support causes they’re passionate about. Over the years, we’ve supported incredible organizations working in medical research, educational innovation, and inequality reduction, with hundreds of thousands of dollars in annual contributions.
