Liquidnet for Good

What is an American financial services firm doing in Rwanda? This is the story about Liquidnet’s comprehensive partnership with the ASYV, a home, community, and high school for 500 orphaned children in Rwanda

Restoring the rhythm of life for traumatized youth

Liquidnet Family High School, Rwanda

At the heart and soul of Liquidnet For Good lies a deep and ongoing relationship with the Liquidnet Family High School in Rwanda. The high school is part of an innovative “youth village” called Agahozo-Shalom (ASYV), which is a home, community, and high school for 500 incredible Rwandan children who were orphaned by genocide. The ASYV recognizes that, with the right place to heal and the tools to flourish, these children have what it takes to invigorate their communities and launch Rwanda to new levels of social and economic success. Students come from every district in Rwanda and spend four years living within the ASYV’s supportive and structured community, with the ultimate goal of equipping young people who have lived through great trauma to become healthy, self-sufficient, and engaged in the rebuilding of their nation.

Since 2006, hundreds of Liquidnet employees, family members, and friends – through a pro bono volunteer network called the Liquidnet Family – have contributed their time, resources, and passion to help turn the idea for the ASYV into the incredible reality it is today. The Liquidnet Family has helped in numerous ways, from assisting with the initial strategic plans for the village, to serving on countless organizing committees, to engaging in many skill-based volunteer trips to Rwanda. Over the years more than 75 employees have travelled to Rwanda to lend their skills, including setting up IT and accounting systems, building a wireless network across the entire campus, installing computer labs, and providing capacity-building leadership training and staff development.

Race for Rwanda

To raise awareness and capital for the ASYV, the Liquidnet Family launched a fundraising platform called Race for Rwanda. Since 2007, over 100 Liquidnet Family members have competed in different competitions around the world– from the NYC Triathlon to a Spartan high endurance race in Sydney – raising over half a million dollars for the ASYV.

Kids for Kids

We don’t mind admitting that we’d like to indoctrinate the next generation with an ethic of generosity. Since 2005, at the end of every year we invite the children of employees and Members around the world to send us drawings based on a theme. In return, each kid receives a giving card worth $50 to donate to the GlobalGiving project of their choice and a book of that year’s collected artwork. The kids love to see their work in print, and we hope that we are helping them to think more broadly about the world around them.

Commitment to Human Rights

To support human rights and affirm our recognition of the inherent dignity and worth of all people, we participate in a global network of donors and grant makers called the International Human Rights Funders Group (IHRFG), which advances human rights through effective philanthropy. Liquidnet is a proud member of this group and also donates office space for their New York staff.
